Beginner Guide

How American Football Works

American football is played between two teams of 11. The offensive team tries to advance the ball down a 100-yard field to score a touchdown (6 points). The defensive team tries to stop them. Teams alternate between offense and defense.

How It Works

  1. 1The offensive team has 4 "downs" (attempts) to advance the ball 10 yards
  2. 2If they gain 10 yards, they get a new set of 4 downs
  3. 3If they fail after 4 downs, possession transfers to the other team
  4. 4On 4th down, teams often "punt" the ball away to improve field position
  5. 5The game is divided into four 15-minute quarters with a halftime break

Scoring

Touchdown = 6 points (ball crosses goal line). Extra Point after TD = 1 (kick) or 2 (run/pass). Field Goal = 3 points (ball kicked through goalposts). Safety = 2 points (defensive team tackles offense in own endzone).

Common Questions

How long does an NFL game last?

4 quarters of 15 minutes each (60 minutes total), but the clock stops frequently. Games typically last 3โ€“3.5 hours. Overtime is 10 minutes (sudden death, or guaranteed possessions in playoffs).

What is the difference between offense and defense?

The offense has the ball and tries to score. The defense is trying to stop them. Teams switch roles after a score, punt, or turnover. Players typically specialize in one side of the ball.

What is a "challenge" flag?

Coaches can throw a red flag to challenge a referee's call on the field. A replay review is conducted โ€” if the coach wins the challenge the call is overturned. Each team gets 2 challenges per game.
