How Basketball Works

Basketball is played between two teams of 5. Players score by shooting the ball through a 10-foot (3m) high hoop. A standard NBA game is 48 minutes divided into four 12-minute quarters.

How It Works

  1. 1Two teams of 5 players compete on a 28m Γ— 15m court
  2. 2The objective is to score points by shooting the ball through the opponent's basket
  3. 3Players advance the ball by dribbling (bouncing it) or passing to teammates
  4. 4A player cannot move with the ball without dribbling (traveling violation)
  5. 5The team with the most points at the end of regulation wins

Scoring

Field goals inside the 3-point arc = 2 points. 3-point shots (beyond the arc) = 3 points. Free throws = 1 point each. Free throws are awarded after fouls.

Common Questions

How long is an NBA game?

An NBA game has four 12-minute quarters (48 minutes total). With timeouts, fouls, and stoppages, games typically last 2–2.5 hours. Overtime periods are 5 minutes each.

What is the shot clock?

Teams must attempt a shot within 24 seconds (NBA) of gaining possession, or they turn the ball over to the opposing team.

Can you touch the rim?

Players can touch the rim but cannot interfere with the ball while it's above the rim heading into the basket β€” that's called goaltending.
